What is divorce?
A divorce is a formal ending of a marriage. It’s more permanent than a separation and involves a legal process. When people talk about divorce, it is likely that they are referring to the emotional fall out of the marriage breaking down and/or the practical arrangements for the children, home, and money so they can separate.
To a lawyer the ‘divorce’ is essentially the paperwork necessary to bring the marriage to an end, legally. The legal process doesn’t actually mean that financial or child arrangements are sorted.
In April 2022, the Divorce, Dissolution, and Separation Act 2020 became law, allowing spouses to legally separate without having to place blame on anyone for the breakdown of the marriage. This is called a “no-fault divorce” and you can read more about the law changes here.
Fixed-Fee Divorce
Our fixed-fee divorce service includes everything related to completing and filing the necessary paperwork to end a marriage, including the initial discussions with an experienced divorce specialist to talk through the process, talking with the respondent to the application, and preparing and issuing the Conditional Order and the Final Order.
Our specialist family law team offers to deal with the dissolution of your marriage at a transparent fixed fee of £675.00 plus VAT for an uncontested no-fault divorce (plus the court fee of £593) if you are the Applicant, or £300 + VAT if you are the Respondent. Most divorces will be eligible, but we will tell you if this does not or cannot apply to you. For example, this would not apply to international or contested divorces.
‘Know where you stand’ Meeting
There’s a lot of information online about getting divorced, and many people can and do complete the paperwork themselves. However, we strongly recommend that you talk to us before submitting any applications. This is because getting a divorce and not dealing with the financial connections between you and your spouse, such as joint ownership of a property or individual pensions, may have a disastrous effect further along the way.
You can discuss all of this during a fixed-fee first meeting with one of our divorce solicitors. The advice we give you in this meeting is tailored to your specific circumstances. Knowing where you stand and how to take the next step is the focus of the first meeting. Want to know more? Click here to find out what to expect at your first meeting.
Contested Divorce
As your divorce solicitor, we can employ negotiation skills to help you, whether it is Mediation or round table meetings. We do all of this and more because discussions between different people are never the same, and there’s never one solution that will fit everyone.
